Makoto Lalwani, president
mlalwani@berkeley.edu

I’m a 4th year ChemE major and EECS minor, with research interests in metabolic engineering. I joined ChemE Car as a freshman, and I’ve seen it grow from a small team competing one car a year to 50+ active members across 10 subteams. I’m also an officer of Tau Beta Pi, and my hobbies include cooking, weightlifting, photography, and competitive SSBM. Reach out to me if you have any questions about joining the team!

Alex Chang, vice president
yuhaochang2012@berkeley.edu

I am a 4th year Chemical Engineering & Material Science and Engineering Joint major undergraduate student with strong interest in electronic materials and properties. I am the President of Chemical Engineering Consulting (ChEC), Vice President of Chem-E-Car, Vice President of American Institute of Chemical Engineering Berkeley Chapter (AIChE), and Senior Advisor of the Cal Environmental Team.

Sushant Gadgil, vice president
sushant.gadgil@berkeley.edu

I am a 3rd year Joint Chemical Engineering & Material Science and Engineering Major with a background in electronic materials and materials synthesis. I joined Chem E Car as a Freshman and served as Treasurer last year. Outside of ChemE Car and class, I am an undergraduate researcher in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department researching low-energy transistors for next generation nonvolatile memory. I also enjoy cooking, biking, and travelling the world. Feel free to reach out to me about anything ChemE Car, science, or life related!

Nasir Merchant, treasurer

I’m a second year College of Chemistry undergrad born in Mountain View, CA, but raised in Overland Park, KS, so I call the Bay Area my home away from home. At Cal, I am treasurer of Chemical Engineering Consulting Group as well a member of AIChE and ESC. In my free time, I love to play soccer, watch the latest episodes of my favorite TV shows (Silicon Valley & House of Cards), and travel with my friends.

Project Leads

Sophia Chan, zinc air battery
sop8hia@berkeley.edu

I’m a third-year Chemical Engineering undergrad currently facing the wrath of ChemE upper-divs. This is my second semester in ChemE car and my first semester as a team lead. I was on the battery team last spring and participated in chemical prep and the poster competition at the 2015 Western Regional Conference in Cal Poly Pomona. I’ve worked in the Radke Lab for 2 years and currently work in the McCloskey lab studying polymer electrolytes. In my spare time, I like to listen to trashy music and watch cat videos.

Chris Chiu, electrical

I am a third year Mechanical Engineering major with minor in Chemistry from Anchorage, Alaska. Currently interested in Hardware, Electrical and Thermal/Material Engineering. I am current working under professor Karl Hedrick on Peak and Shock of Tennis Racquets as well as various projects on Robots and Cars. My favorite sports are tennis, hockey, and cars. To get to know me, you got to know my hobbies. My hobbies are watching football, tennis, chilling with friends, and doing various dangerous experiments!

Jeffrey Kurohara, mechanical

Hi friends! I am a fourth year mechanical engineering major from Thousand Oaks, CA. I’m president of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Berkeley, and I enjoy aerial photography and model aircraft. I like to get my hands dirty building things and taking them apart; for my research I design insect robots and drones. Outside of engineering, I do hip hop dance in AFX. If you like planes, robots, or dance, hit me up!

Andrew MacDonald, zinc-manganese dioxide battery
